Everah It’s clear that immense effort crafted a thoughtful, compelling, and romantic response to “Estrangement and reconciliation: the self has it out with the self” by Leslie Ullman. But who is talking and why? Favorite track: New Weapon.

Paralyzed 04:04
You’re paralyzed and I’m in my mind and I can’t decide whether I’ve died. You’ve found a light now and I’m so sad ‘cause I’m still alive. Take me with you when you fly wherever you’re going. Take me with you. I don’t care where we go from here. (Wait let me try that again.)

How many of us don’t know what we want? How many graduates still live with their moms? What are all the things that eat away at you? Whatever you run away from always seems to come true. Who you gonna be? What are you gonna do? Whatever you run away from always seems to come true, so get closer get a little closer, closer to your truth. What do you do when joining a community means playing with the typical tongues of fire? I get burned for being honest, burned for being myself, burned for playing the game 'cause then I can't live with myself, burned for being modest, burned for hating myself, burned for staying away 'cause then I can’t live by myself. Sure I could wear a flame retardant suit but that only seems to save me from the best of you. Already callous from scars: sometimes this suit becomes a prison. How many layers of skin do I have to lose to get closer, to get closer, to get closer? (to get closer) I will do whatever I have to do. (to get closer) Someone tell me what we should do? (to get closer) I can’t take this anymore. (Let’s get closer) I’m still burning and scarred. So please let’s get closer. Sure I could wear a flame retardant suit, but that only seems to save me from the best of you. Already callous from the scars: sometimes this suit becomes a prison. How many layers of skin do I have to lose to get closer to get closer to you?

Reg-X 04:55
I don’t want to be a part of you. I don’t align with your sense of justice. There’s a part of you and a world that’s just for me. An anomaly: you, a special brain in the sea. And the part of you that doesn’t understand trees... Just let me sing. I just wanna be free. I don’t want to be another you. How could I think that you could be trusted? ‘Cause I love you, and you want what’s best for me? You don’t have to do anything for me. Does it bother you that I could up and leave? Don’t clip my wings. I wanna be free. Don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it and I won’t do it won’t do it won’t do it won’t do it. I don’t wanna take care of you. You’re a human, not a pet or potted flower. I’ve been crying, can’t water you, but if I don’t do it don’t do it, would you live would you live? If I don’t do it don’t do it would you live? Would you live if I don’t do it? Don’t do it. Would you live? Would you live? Wanna go through with it? I can show you one way. How to burn a bridge. “Never look back,” my father said. There’s no distance without a little conflict This is useless. You know it just feels like: (instrumental + glossolalia & “if I love”)

A Way Out 04:55
You said life wouldn’t be like this you lied. May- be I’m afraid of living my own life but I try. If we can’t find a way out of our minds, we’re gonna die online, 'cause nobody tries online, and everybody fries online. Somebody end this scroll. Please put down that screen and talk to me, please try. May- be you’re afraid of true intimacy and crying. If we can’t find a way out of our li(v)es, we’re gonna die online 'cause nobody cries online, yeah everybody hides online, and nobody lends a hand. (Miniature/Digital) eyes seek criminal minds and the mirrors keep deep faking us all. Glass screens won’t keep breaking, silicone won’t disintegrate. No matter what it takes oh we’ll jailbreak and jailbreak and (digital/miniature) lives in binary skies, and our hands holding LED walls... No more visible connection, no interaction but Aaron said it’s only a rectangle, rectangle. It’s only there when you’re there. It's only there when you're there.

I didn’t see it coming. Spun right off the road. I should looked over my shoulder. Text arrived on my phone. Now I’m dying alone, why of all times do I remember? And I’m crying, you know I can’t seem to forget her. I forgot about the blind spot. Now the lights keep on flashing as drivers keep on passing me by: my still life. Am I still alive? Still life. Still alive. Still alive in my still life? Paint a portrait of me lying. A photograph will do, too. Freeze the frame, beat forensics. Only you will ever know the truth. And they’re trying you know but they’re blinded looking forward. Oh they lie, and they don’t know that their flashes are on backwards. My father said you can’t go forward with your eyes in the rearview. Maybe I’ve had it wrong this whole time by driving on this western route. Still life. Still alive?

You made false DNA. You made it part of my own mechanical chromosomes. Humans fall every day, yeah. But you… yeah you made me shining brand new. When you fall and fade away you may still live on in water, nitrogen, and carbon, but I won’t fall any day soon, ‘cause you… yeah you left me shining brand new. Maybe if all my limbs have felt, very soon my man-made body may cry for everyone like you who I’ve outlived. Oh why oh why am I alive? Oh why oh why can’t I just die? Well I’ll just carry on and survive without you, yeah, and true I’ll be alone, but I’ll make do without you, yeah I will be strong like I’ve always done, thrive not survive ‘cause I’m alive.

No Savior 04:51
When you guess the way forward you can stay stuck, afraid for yourself to fall— so stay small. Celebrate, love, today you made a small step in the right direction and one footfall closer to dreams. Say yay for today’s sun.. Don’t wait for a savior. Face your unknown and jump. Where’re you going tomorrow stay with me a while and play more like a child with stars around you. Make a brave choice, swim a wave, boy, take a plunge to fight depression. Patience, joy, and love are all you need. Say yay for today’s sun. There’s no savior. Make your own love. Say yay for today’s sun. Don’t wait for a savior. Face your unknown and jump. Turning back, you never left behind the sun where I was born, but then again, we can pretend instead he said, “remember when it’s in it’s in it’s in it’s in your head head head head.”

I-330 05:27
You say you’re awake. Please come with me, I don’t care anymore I don’t carry a war. If we escape, don’t be afraid. You know I don’t love this. We will find a way out, I believe. I believe in love’s will. But do you do you? Do you do you want to stay mad forever, and never change your mind, live in fear forever? We could live together out there. Now tell me a secret.

Haze of why, colors in these eyes, I can’t see. I can’t get through the rain. Blaze of white colors and these feelings are stars; I can’t see anything but you. Well raindrops keep complicating my brain every day. Colors in my eyes I can’t breathe, I can’t sigh, I can’t get any relief from you. Oh the sound of your voice tickling my ear would be fine, or your paper skeleton enveloped in my arms in the morning. Oh the song of your voice: a whisper in my ear when we’re alone. Oh the secrets we’ve known will never be too secret for long. Sing me a song or write me a letter in the post. If I could hear your voice in the words you wrote --"feel better"-- but I won’t ever feel better until I’m with you, until I’m with you.

I was asleep and the phone rings. I was asleep; the phone rings. Asleep was the phone and I, ringing, was the sleeping. Rings the phone, I sleep, phone ringing, I was, rings I was, sleep I was, phone. The phone asleep I rings phone I was the phone and the phone was the ringing and ringing was the was was the I phone ringing iPhone asleep and I was I was I was rings ringing was phone ringing. I sleep phone was I and was the I asleep phone I was ringing and I was asleep, and the phone I was ringing sleep phone ring I rings phone and when does the phone start ringing?

Toothsome 02:09
You choose human life, your disguise of love Loose tooths dangling lightly, wangling quietly. When you have days remember they love you. We loved you. I loved you most of all. Tell the truth and I’ll save you. You were safe. You were safe. You were safe. You were safe with me here.

Refresh 07:26
Start all over again and again. Scroll for dopamine. Glitch—start over (anew/a new) jamais vu. Your failings come easily like morning fading into evening. Will your new sayings become clichéd like fungus preying on the fallen dead? When you’re all in you’ll be falling. Hear it calling? Will you fall in? Now you’re older, but here again. Refresh—memory clean. How many times have you had jamais vu? You’re fading beyond the edge of a signal failing as you play pretend, that is, evade and say it’s all a game. Well why do players need to ease some pain? When you’re all in you’ll be falling. Hear it calling? Will you fall in? [Hit REFRESH refill your head, refresh, reset, forget. You’re mechanical into your death. Refresh again. You’re fed on Internet and you’re falling in again. Refill your head. Refresh, reset, forget. You’re mechanical into your death. Refresh again as if you’ve never played before.] Say you won’t replay for long. Say you won't replay for long. Say you won't replay for long. Say you won't replay for long. Say you never never ever will. Say you never ever will.

New Weapon 05:50
You weapon: new weapon. People tell you that anything you do is red white and blue. You found this interesting, and it’s arresting. New weapon... New weapon... Anything you do can maybe come true, maybe, just maybe. Anything you do can maybe come true, maybe, maybe... just maybe, you weapon.

about

Please take the time to listen to this as a complete work/experience.

iAnother explores ideas of intimacy and social alienation in a speculative cyberpunk dystopia, where refresh culture, smartphones, and social media have trashed human life.

In this chaos is a dejected Dylanesque singer-songwriter who, because of a near-fatal injury, is transformed into a cyborg by a cyborg-doctor (i.e. someone who repairs cyborgs, and who also happens to be the love of the protagonist's life) right before most of humanity (doctor/love included) obliterates itself in a technological apocalypse. This singer calls themself "i".

i spends their days wandering across the massive scrapyard that Earth has become, lamenting the loss of human connection and recording cyberpop songs to send back to 2020 CE, in hopes of sparking a new and more positive timeline.

The title "iAnother" is a nod to 19th century French Symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud, who wrote "Je est un autre," or "I is another," by one translation, or "I is someone else," by another.

In a way this is more like a live album than a studio album since each song was played through and multitracked live with minimal to no overdubs. The instrumental pieces (Downloading... and the interludes) are single track recordings. Equipment used throughout included a Korg Microsampler and Roland SP-555 (both routed through a few effects units), guitar with various effects pedals, and mic'd vocals through a Boss VE-20. Also noteworthy is Monarcadia's use of the Microsampler to play chromaticized vocal samples like a keyboard patch, a technique that in the Monarcadia catalog first appeared on the Voice Memo: Oversexed album.
